The curriculum

Nothing assumed. Everything explained.

Chapters one and two contain no science at all. Chapter three builds cancer biology from the cell upward. Chapter five is a reference you keep coming back to rather than something you read once.

Thinking

How science reasons — and how not to fool yourself

  • What a claim has to do to earn belief
  • Strong inference: list the rivals, then kill them
  • The three things a p-value is not
  • Turning a result into the next question

CHAPTER 2

Practice

Integrity, collaboration, and saying it straight

  • The three bright lines — and the grey zone that does more damage
  • Why integrity is engineered, not felt
  • Giving critique that is actually worth receiving
  • How an honest person misleads with a chart

The Science

What cancer is, and how a cell powers and builds itself

  • From the cell to the central dogma to driver mutations
  • Cancer as evolution, running inside a tissue
  • Reading a real stained tissue section
  • The Warburg effect — and what it does not mean

CHAPTER 4

Data & Tools

What data exists, and how to handle it without breaking it

  • Four data types, and the different questions each answers
  • TCGA, DepMap, GEO — what each one holds
  • The two silent killers: units and orientation
  • Building a loader that fails loudly

CHAPTER 5

The Toolkit

The statistics and the code, as a reference you return to

  • A decision guide from your question to the right method
  • Eight taught ideas everything else is built from
  • Seventeen methods, each with the trap it hides
  • Regression, adjustment, and holding things fixed

CHAPTER 6

Build Your Own

Now go and find a question of your own

  • Finding the gap the field has never tested
  • Sharpening a topic into something answerable
  • Pre-registering before you look at anything
  • Reading your own result honestly

Open to critique

Published to be argued with.

Work that anyone can inspect is work that can be corrected. If a claim is overstated, a figure misleads, or an explanation does not land, say so — we teach students to do exactly this, and the curriculum should be held to the same standard.

Send feedback

Using it

Take it, teach from it, tell us where it is wrong.

All six chapters are free to read, free to share and free to teach from. No sign-up and no email wall.

01

Reading it on your own

Start at Chapter 1 and go in order. Chapters 1 and 2 need no science at all, and the checkpoints through each chapter tell you whether it landed before you move on.

02

Teaching from it

The weekly plan maps all six chapters onto seventeen two-hour sessions, with a video or reading attached to each. Take it as it is or cut it to fit your own timetable.

03

Telling us it is wrong

We published this openly so it can be corrected. If something in it is mistaken, out of date, or badly explained, write to us and we will fix it.

Assignments

Six assignments, chained into one project

Not separate homework. Assignment three is where your own research question is born, and everything after it sharpens that same question.

1

The Claim Audit

Take a published claim apart. Place it on the ladder, list every rival explanation, and design the test that kills each one.

2

Critique & Redraw

Review a peer's work properly — steelmanned and specific. Then find a published figure that misleads, and fix it.

3

The Untraced Claim Log

Read into something that interests you, hunting for claims everyone cites and nobody has tested. Trace three back to the source. This is where your question comes from.

4

The Data Audit

Find out whether the data to answer your question actually exists — and say plainly what it cannot answer.

5

The Design

Pre-register it. Method, controls, thresholds, and one sentence naming the result that would prove you wrong.

6

The Capstone

Run it. Report it at the strength the evidence supports. Then decide: extend, validate, or abandon.
